You Want ME To Do What?

In my obsessive research I learned something interesting.  The 8 glasses of water a day seems to be somewhat of a myth.  It will not change the way I drink water.  For me it seems if I drink a bunch I just feel better.  I also want to eat less when I drink a ton.  Since I know it will not hurt me it just makes sense to drink up.  Something that might be different for me than most big dudes is I do not drink alcohol.  When I was younger I drank like a fish and at about 25 I just quit.  No real reason other than I just did not enjoy the scene anymore at all.  I have only been drunk once in the past 15 years and that was on July 4th of this year.  Someone made some sweet apple martini thing by the jug and I just played along.  The point is it does not play any role in my weight.   I must admit my mommy bought me a big diet coke bottle which I will enjoy but after that it is pretty much back to water only.

This article reminded me of a nutritionist I was seeing last week.  As I mentioned earlier I was in the process of doing the Gastric Bypass thing and one of the steps is seeing a nutritionist.  Let me be clear about something.  I like her a great deal personally and she surely knows what she is talking about but it was not going to work for me.  We discussed my habits and why I was over weight and I boiled it down  to fast food and soda.  That and taking the easy way out and habits I have formed over 25 years.  She advised me to only drink diet soda (as much as I wanted) and cut down my fast food intake to 5 times a week.  Now this is a little embarrassing but one of the core points of my plan is being honest about this entire deal.  The truth is I was eating fast food between 2 and 4 times a day during the week and maybe once or twice on the weekend.  And usually in fairly ridiculous amounts.  So that is 12-22 times a week. I guess looking at it now that might be a reasonable place to start,  cutting that down.  The thing is I did not want that.  I wanted to cut out all soda and fast food.  To me my eating habits are somewhat similar to an alcoholic.  No way they would tell me I should start out by only drinking lite beer and cutting out everything else.  The thing is she refused to let me do that.  She insisted I eat fast food 5 times a week.  I went to her for about a month with little results.  We argued about the plan each time.  I ended up quitting altogether when my back pain got so bad that I couldn't sit in a chair for even a minute during an appointment.  As I couldn't stand either it was not going to work.  I just couldn't see myself laying on the floor talking to this woman.  I am sure their was a reason she was instructing me this way.  It just seemed straight up crazy to me.  Maybe I should get to the point of why I bring this up.  She was also selling the 8 glasses of whatever plan.  Jenny Craig sold it to.   The person in the above article is suggesting it is nonsense.  Hmmmmm.

The Voice In My Head

Is it possible for a guy like me to lose 315 pounds without the help of professionals?  I feel like that is a question I should ask myself.  I think I can to be honest.  It's not like I do not know what to do or how to use google.  I also know tons of people who have skills in weight management.  I have been looking around at weight loss blogs and I am seeing a bunch but not any written by dudes.  I do not think it is a case of not knowing where to look either.  I have some read some things that seem helpful from the ladies but I can't stop thinking it's a pretty different situation for me.   I am deliberately trying to do this with limited structure.  At the very least I am approaching this from a very experimental angle.  Mainly because I have tried a bunch and the only thing that ever worked was Jenny Craig.  Some people have asked me why I do not just do that again.  I have to admit that is tempting.  I also came very close to doing the gastric bypass thing.  That fell through due to insurance issues.  I was originally a bit sad about that but not any more.  What I am trying to do in the end is learn to live the right way.  I think this will be the most rewarding way.  I have to say also that so far this blog has been great for me.  It might not always be all that interesting but it is a sweet way for me to talk things out in my head.  As always I am open to tips so feel free to holla.

Day 5

Because of the continued heat I got my exercise out of the way early today.  I certainly did not over do it.  Just a nice walk in the heat.  I felt guilty about not doing any yesterday.  I have not pumped the water into me today yet and I can feel the difference.  That will be the next thing I do,  I am fighting the urge to jump on the scale but I really want to make it until Thursday.  Probably not a big deal either way.  Just that if you make a plan you should try to stick to it.  Today I drove back from mom and pops' house.  The thought of stopping off and "rewarding myself" with some Burger King definitely was there but not as overwhelming.  I thought about it and just blew it off immediately so I guess that is progress.  One challenge that always presents itself to me is the waiting for results.  Once I get locked in I want to lose it all over night.  That obviously is not an option.  I am just trying to figure different ways I can handle more exercise in conjuction with my three ruptured discs in my back.  Hmmmmmm.
